Many out there are what could be considered “Christmas Christians,” heading to church on Dec. 25 (for the carols) and suddenly getting all charitable and stuff as soon as It’s a Wonderful Life starts playing in heavy rotation. Not that this is a bad thing. Surely local churches are happy to see more smiling faces and the city’s charities certainly welcome a boost of support. But what happens come January, then February, or heck, all the months between this Christmas and next? Maybe it all leads back to that eternal question often posed in cheesy holiday movies: just how do we keep the Christmas spirit alive all year long?

If you’d like to support Siloam Mission, here are some ways that you can help spread your joy (and money) this coming year.

• Buy birthday cards. Imagine how you’d feel if your friends and family forgot or ignored your birthday? What if you got no present, cake, party or dinner out? To make sure that everyone gets to celebrate their special day, Siloam hosts group birthday parties each month. Donated cards are collected and given to patrons as a special note just for them.

• Sort clothes. Siloam Mission gets lots of clothes donated that they sort and give to their patrons. As a majority of the patrons are male, the women’s clothing often gets shared with other agencies. A free service, this “store” gets thousands of visits each year.

• Serve dinner. Choose a night and gather a group of friends, family or coworkers (maybe the whole office!) to serve as hosts and servers for an evening or lunchtime meal. To pre-book, call Siloam’s offices at 956-4344.

• Adopt a plate. One great way of giving all year is setting up monthly withdrawals, either from your bank account or credit card. This can be a set amount that is used for any need or can be part of the “adopt a plate” program, through which you can feed five people every month for just $12.90.

• Share your talent. Whether you can cut hair, read a book, do someone’s taxes, provide professional healthcare, or are simply great at wiping down a table, the Siloam Mission can use your skills.

For those who do want to give something special this December, check out the “Christmas Catalogue” on the Siloam Mission website at siloam.ca. Here you can choose exactly what you want to support. For instance, you can click on “Give the inner city a meal” and choose to feed 10 people for $25.80. Or you can choose “Three hots and a cot” and for just $24.24 ensure that one person receives three hot meals and a night in the shelter. There are options for every pocketbook, supporting everything from providing a free dental cleaning to buying new furniture for the dining room.
