 Launched in San Francisco nearly 30 years ago, Benefit is thoroughly modern, marketing to the young urban woman who can’t resist cute packaging and clever product names. “Gee…That Was Quick” makeup remover, “That Gal” brightening face primer, and a creamy, creaseless shadow in shades like “skinny jeans” and “my date’s brother” are favourites. Thankfully you can now buy the whole Benefit line at the Beauty Boutique at Shoppers Drug Mart in Portage Place.
Opened in June, the airy boutique is the first in Manitoba, and part of a nationwide string of upscale fragrance and cosmetics stores added on to Shoppers Drug Mart locations. “Basically the theory behind them is that health and beauty go together in the minds of many consumers,” says Pat Chapman, director of communications for Shoppers Drug Mart. “The bulk of our shoppers are women and they were looking for prestige cosmetics and fragrance brands. We can offer an upscale beauty experience.”
Having the province’s first boutique is a coup for Curtis Solmundson, pharmacist owner of the Portage Place location. “Customers are very excited about it,” he says. “The boutique is modern and urban and caters to a working downtown crowd.”
Part of the attraction is that unlike other stores, the Beauty Boutique carries the complete lines of brands like Smashbox and Shiseido, as well as the latter brand’s men’s line. Fragrances are also hot here and the store carries just about every new scent, from Puma to Lacoste.
The final trick in the Beauty Boutique’s makeup bag is that they have in-store makeup artists who can be booked for makeovers and are on-hand at the store’s many special events.
