Picturing The Peg and the City of God: Subconscious City and Illuminating the Word

What does Winnipeg look like? That depends on your vantage point. Curated by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan, Subconscious City, showing at the Winnipeg Art Gallery until May 11, is a collection of recent work by a who’s-who of upcoming and established local artists. Working in all manner of media, these artists have produced a multi-faceted portrait of The Peg: its surface and its underneath, its then and its now. This is your grandpa’s Winnipeg, too­­—but as seen through multigenerational eyes, and from
unconventional angles.

HOW DID THEY GET THE NONSUCH INSIDE THE MANITOBA MUSEUM?

As the replica of the Nonsuch in the Manitoba Museum sits bone-dry on a painted floor, you’d never know the ship braved the ocean to make its debut in Winnipeg. In 1968, J. Hinks & Son built the replica in Appledore, England, marking the 300th anniversary of the original’s creation.

Three of us escaped our suburban office for Friday lunch at the Ham-N-Eggs Grill. Our expectations were met by a greasy, but cheerful, hole in the wall. The menu offered such sure favourites as the Terminator burger (boasting five patties, bacon and cheese), the Quadruple Bypass (four patties, one pun), and Flatliner Fries. We settled on less ominous options of cheeseburger, mushroom burger and veggie burger platters, which all came with fries, coleslaw and canned drink included.
