history lessonFor more than 20 years, the greying brick Metropolitan Theatre has been shuttered to public eyes—leaving the building’s true grandeur well-hidden inside. With CanadInns’ recent promise to restore the relic into a rock resto-bar, The Met has rejoined the conversation. Whether you’re pro-Hard Rock or not, refurbishing the last standing of the great luxury theatres in the city, in whatever way, can only be a good thing.

history lessonThe rise and fall—and promising rebirth—of the motion picture palace:
1919    The 2,300 capacity Allen Theatre is built by the national chain, designed by architect C.H. Crane.
1923    The Allen Theatre companies lose out to their rival, Famous Players, and sell them the theatre, which is promptly        renamed the Metropolitan. Renovations in the twenties and mid-century to accommodate changes in technology and customer concession-needs leave the main floor reconfigured.
1987    The curtain falls on the grand old Met.
1997    Heritage status listed.
2006    Whispers of a rock ‘n’ roll themed restaurant circulate.
2007    It’s official—CanadInns purchases the theatre for $100,000.
