 After years of buzz, we can expect to hear a groundbreaking announcement about the $265 million Canadian Museum for Human Rights sometime this year. The cityscape won’t change overnight—the museum’s director of communications, Kim Jasper, can’t identify a construction start date, but she plans for a 2011 opening after a four-year engineering and building process.
“The federal funding made it more of a sure thing,” says Jasper, about an April funding commitment that topped off funding from three levels of government—$100 million from the Government of Canada, $40 million from the Province of Manitoba, and $20 million from the City of Winnipeg. With fundraising reps in cities across the country, the museum plans to focus all their time on raising the near $30 million it needs in private funding.
Jasper believes the city and province should be proud of this accomplishment, and of the breakthroughs the museum owns claim to as the first federally-designated national institution outside the National Capital Area and the first national institution planned as a public-private venture.
