This summer kicks off a year-long lineup of contemporary art exhibits at the Winnipeg Art Gallery that befit the gallery’s modernist exterior.
First up, a contrast of recent works by two northern indigenous cultures—the Sámi of Scandinavia and the Canadian Inuit. European influence has similarly affected the culture of both groups and this exhibit looks at how their modern works reflect their pasts. Perhaps it’s the two cultures’ tradition of creating art with a functional purpose that makes works in this collection so unexpectedly sleek. In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun: Sámi and Inuit Art 2000-2005 runs until August 19.
Bold nostalgic graphics, pop culture, politics and humour abound in Aidan Urquhart’s tongue-in-cheek works depicting childhood in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Worth the visit is Urquhart’s large scale work made up of individual faxed drawings. The piece exemplifies the uncertainties of growing up and hoping everything will come out alright. Lost Boy: Aidan Urquhart runs from June 30-September 2. Memorial Boulevard, 786.1760, www.wag.mb.ca |
