To make sense of the 141 acts in this year’s Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, executive producer, Nick Kowalchuk, says to read your bible—the official program. “Get one at least a week ahead of time, for proper and complete planning,” he suggests. “With so many shows it’s a bit of a puzzle—I always have 10 or 20 options.”
In its 20th year, the Fringe has become downtown’s premier summer festival and one of the most popular in Canada—second only to Edmonton. “Winnipeggers get it,” says Kowalchuk, describing the Fringe experience. “It’s fascinating to hear people push a show to strangers. I see it constantly, how people are so open.”
Every year, the festival presents shows that become hot tickets, but there are always those that stay below the radar. “That’s the beauty of the Fringe,” says Kowalchuk, “unknown shows that take your breath away.” The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival runs from July 18-29. 9.4.FRINGE, www.winnipegfringe.com |
