WHERE WE'LL BE WHEN WE LEAVE THE OFFICE THIS SUMMER.
1. Souvenir of Canada – The documentary version of Canadian pop culture commentator Douglas Coupland’s book of the same name is playing at the WAG on May 22. Admission is free and the show starts at 7 p.m. Call 789-1760 or visit wag.mb.ca .
2. Surface – A Fred Thomas Solo Exhibit – The Graffiti Gallery plays host to the work of this local artist, whose graffiti based paintings and sketches can be found on a wide variety of surfaces—from street signs to paint can lids. All work is for sale, if you can get it—nearly half of the collection sold on opening night. Runs until June 3. Call 667-9960 or visit graffitigallery.ca .
3. Exchange District Farmer’s Market – Strolling through the Old Market Square on a summer Saturday is an experience made better by two things—1) Live music, curry in a hurry and jewelry stalls during the Fringe, and: 2) the farmer’s market. Open for business Saturdays from July 5 to September 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the farmer’s market is a great place to find fresh veggies, jams and all sorts of homemade, home grown fare. Fresh food downtown—a concept we can get into.
4. The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival – Obviously everyone who loves to hang out downtown loves the Fringe—just how many times does a beer tent get erected on Bannatyne Ave. after all? But there is great theatre too, and those lucky enough to work in the area might just get to sneak in a show at lunch or during an extended coffee break. This year’s Fringe has a Vegas theme, which is perfect for an event where chance often plays into the choosing of a great production. Call 956-1340 or visit winnipegfringe.com .
5. Jazz in the Courtyard (and on the rooftop) – Choose your view—the roof of the WAG, overlooking downtown, or the Canwest courtyard at the city’s most famous intersection. Both venues will be hot spots for jazz lovers this summer as they launch their annual concert series. Jazz in the Courtyard will happen Fridays at lunchtime (942-6716, creswin.ca), while Jazz on the Rooftop happens Thursday nights (789-1760, wag.mb.ca ).
6. Wilco – A little bit country, a little bit folk, with a shot of everything else thrown in, this band has a huge fan base in Winnipeg and is back at The Burt on May 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets $29.50-$42.50. Call 780-3333 or visit ticketmaster.com .
7. Moonlight Movies – Enjoy a little cinema under the stars at Old Market Square on July 6 and 7. The big screen lights up at dusk. Call 942-6716 or exchangedistrict.org . |
