The 3D IMAX films are based on human vision, to optimize viewing of each film. When your eyes focus on an object, each one sees it from a slightly different view. Through a process called stereopsis, the brain fuses the two images together to form a single 3D image. Each IMAX 3D film is therefore recorded onto two separate films, one for the left eye and one for the right.

Chief projectionist Rick Magnuson has quite the task each time he runs the projector. The films must run in perfect synch for the proper 3D effect; having them run even a split second off would result in less than stunning visuals, and a headache within 20 minutes. To prevent this from happening, regular tests are performed on the projector to keep things running in perfect form.

The projector is lit by two 15,000-watt bulbs, one for each eye. When you consider that the average household bulb is about 60 watts, you can understand how the IMAX projector bulbs can heat up. To keep them from burning out, the bulbs are continuously air cooled and water cooled, and are changed approximately every 1,100 hours of use.
