When I first moved to Winnipeg from small-town B.C., I was terrified of the downtown. Every person who crossed my path was a potential mugger… or worse. I visibly jumped if someone spoke to me, or tapped me on the shoulder while I was waiting for the bus. If I had the bad fortune of finding myself downtown at night, I practically sprinted home, house keys clutched in one hand to use as a weapon, if need be.

A GROUP OF YOUNG PEOPLE FIND A HOME IN A UNIQUE DOWNTOWN SPACE.
A group of urban pioneers intends to help invigorate their neighbourhood, based out of an enclave in downtown Winnipeg that optimistic developers built on a plot of land that once wasted as a parking lot. The tenants of the Webbsite condominiums—at 443 Webb Place, two blocks behind the Investors Group building—came to Winnipeg from cities all over Canada and from the other side of Europe. They gravitated seemingly by chance to this experimental project at the centre of a small but compelling pocket of downtown development. |

HOW DID THEY GET THE NONSUCH INSIDE THE MANITOBA MUSEUM?
As the replica of the Nonsuch in the Manitoba Museum sits bone-dry on a painted floor, you’d never know the ship braved the ocean to make its debut in Winnipeg. In 1968, J. Hinks & Son built the replica in Appledore, England, marking the 300th anniversary of the original’s creation.

WE SEND LOCALS TO LUNCH AT FOUR REAL DEAL DOWNTOWN DINERS.
Matthew Baker ‑ Intern Architect Ham-N-Eggs Grill, 273 Princess St. Three of us escaped our suburban office for Friday lunch at the Ham-N-Eggs Grill. Our expectations were met by a greasy, but cheerful, hole in the wall. The menu offered such sure favourites as the Terminator burger (boasting five patties, bacon and cheese), the Quadruple Bypass (four patties, one pun), and Flatliner Fries. We settled on less ominous options of cheeseburger, mushroom burger and veggie burger platters, which all came with fries, coleslaw and canned drink included. |

BIRKS BRINGS BACK THAT OLD TIME PANACHE
It’s the kind of place Holly Golightly might drop by for lunch. Occupying the first floor of the Union Trust Tower at 191 Lombard Ave., is the new Winnipeg location of luxury jewellers Birks.
Officially placed on Winnipeg’s Heritage Conservation list in 1983, the UTT (also known as the National Bank Building) is an architectural gem that, after many years, has now regained its former lustre. |
